Soccer's rule-making body sought Saturday to clarify the sport's offside definition in a bid to reduce widespread uncertainty for referees, players and fans.
"The change states that an attacker should be considered offside when ''gaining an advantage by being in that position'' in situations that will now include receiving the ball from a rebound or deflection from the goal frame or a player in the defending team attempting a tackle, block or save."
so say a shot is hit from outside the 18 area by player X. player Y is onside when the shot was taken, but all the defenders run up field, leaving player Y offside after the ball hits the post. Player Y is then offside and cant put in the rebound?.........
yeah this new rule is definitely gonna stop confusion among players, referees and fans. /s
Not quite. Say player X has a shot from outside the 18 yard box and player Y is offside. If the shot goes in the goal stands because player Y didnt interfere or benefit in any way. Say the shot is saved or comes back off the post and comes to player Y then he's offside. He would also be offside if the shot from player X passes close enough to him that the referee dems the player obstructed the view of the goalkeeper or created confusion by the potential of a deflection.
Its basically the interferance rule we have in the UK already and works just fine.
