Platini: Ballon d'Or should go to a German

Real Madrid's prolific forward Cristiano Ronaldo is widely expected to retain the prize after firing the Spanish side to 10th European Cup last season, while four-time winner Lionel Messi is also in contention after breaking the Liga and Champions League all-time goalscoring records.

The story is too old to be commented.

Blatter and Platini

time they stopped hating on ronaldo, its getting ridiculous now.

Why does there always have to be some conspiracy when it comes to Ronaldo? He is always gonna be compared against someone. Every top player is. Also the above is not hating, it's a fair comparison against the best players at the time.

i think everyone knows ronaldo isnt platinis or blatters pick to win the ballon d'or. lets be honest here, 2013 was riberys award but because blatter opened his mouth and insulted ronaldo, they had to make it up otherwise it looked like messi favoritism.

not to mention when you look back at 2010 to 2014 and see what earned messi his ballon d'or to what ronaldo, neuer and muller have now

messi 2010:
laliga 2009-10
Supercopa de España
European Golden Shoe
UEFA Champions League Top Goalscorer
LFP Best Player
Pichichi Trophy
LFP Best Forward: 2009/10
excluding awards for team of the year, etc

blatter and platini never mentioned that a spanish player/world cup winner should win the ballon d'or. or that a world cup winner always won the ballon d'or in a world cup year.

ronaldo 2014
UEFA Champions League
UEFA Super Cup
European Golden Shoe
UEFA Champions League top scorer
La Liga top scorer
Pichichi Trophy
LFP Best Forward: 2013–14
excluding awards for team of the year, etc

manuel neuer 2014
Bundesliga
DFB-Pokal
Footballer of the Year in Germany
FIFA World Cup 2014 Golden Glove
excluding awards for team of the year

thomas muller
Bundesliga
DFB-Pokal
FIFA World Cup Silver Ball
FIFA World Cup Silver Boot

suddenly now, a german/world cup winner deserves the ballon d'or.

how does this add up in platinis head?

personally i think platinis blood is boiling at the thought of ronaldo matching him in Ballon D'ors. lol

@kingpin, your criteria for winning is largely based on goal scoring. When Nedved won it in 2003 and Cannavaro won it in 2006 they weren't exactly hammering in goals. Kaka won it in 2007 and he wasn't banging in goals either, so I don't think it's all about that and it never has been. What they all did though was play like machines to help their team, even if they didn't win a major trophy. Nedved was a beast in Juve's CL run in 2003 were he bossed Madrid in the semis but got suspended for the final which Juve lost.

I think it's more about the player who best represents the spirit of the sport in the current year, and in that regard I don't think Ronaldo does himself many favours.

I personally thought two of his celebrations in the CL last season were downright pathetic; one being his muscle celebration after the penalty he scored against Atletico (in a game were he was totally absent) and the other one being his "15" celebration when Bale selflessly squared the ball to him when Bale was one on one against Bayern. He ran off to celebrate his own achievement rather than celebrate with Bale who selflessly assisted him in breaking Messi's record.

There is another post around here about Ronaldo being obsessed with catching Messi and being "the best", and he always seems to suggest that by his actions. He has an air of "it's all about me" about him. I can't fault his goal scoring ability (he is top, top class in that regard) but his arrogance infuriates me. I like my sporting heroes to have humility.

Which brings me to my thoughts that if Neuer wins it I won't be surprised in the slightest. In actual fact, if the voting had of been open another week to see Messi break another two records I wouldn't be at all surprised if he won it either.

Just my thoughts on the "Ronaldo vs the world" debate :)

@asmith
i fully agree with you on a lot of points that you bring up especially for kaka, cannavaro, nedved being machines the years that they won the award.

Goal scoring isnt my criteria specifically, im just reasoning as to what criteria they used to give messi his ballon D'or over a world cup winner in 2010. (over xavi and iniesta)

as for the ronaldo being selfish, he can be at times but he also does thank his team mates and club staff quite a bit in his speeches/interviews.

"I think it's more about the player who best represents the spirit of the sport in the current year, and in that regard I don't think Ronaldo does himself many favours."

not to start an argument here but if the above statement is true, why argue when suarez wasnt even nominated because of biting? how is biting best representing the spirit of the sport? its like lets overlook biting and base it on his football talent only, but when it comes to other players, lets take everything into account.

with regards to neuer, i think he is a great keeper, possibly the best keeper in the world but there have been better keepers (buffon, schmeichel, kahn) who didnt have the likes of messi and ronaldo competing against them for the award and still walked away empty handed. so yeah, handing it to neuer now is like a big F-U to previous keepers. although id have to say, if we didnt have 2 all time greats on the planet right now, then yeah, give it to a german.

@Kingpin, "not to start an argument here but if the above statement is true, why argue when suarez wasnt even nominated because of biting? how is biting best representing the spirit of the sport?" - haha it's not! But I think that footballing ability should be at least nominated. Zidane for example was in the top 10 in 2001 and top 5 in 2006 even though he leathered people with headbutts in those years. I think if Zidane hadn't of done it in 2006 he definitely would have won it that year. If he (or Suarez) won it though after their actions it would be a disgrace obviously.

"handing it to neuer now is like a big F-U to previous keepers." - someone has to break the cycle eventually.

"if we didnt have 2 all time greats on the planet right now, then yeah, give it to a german." - Agreed.
