Whelan: One more year for Fergie

Sir Alex Ferguson will step down as Manchester United manager at the end of the 2012-13 season, according to Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan.

Ferguson, 70, has been at the United helm since 1986, leading the club to incredible success during his tenure which has included 12 Premier League titles.

The Scot has toyed with the idea of calling time on his coaching days, announcing plans to do so at the end of the 2001-02 campaign, but then decided to stay on as Red Devils manager. Although in December 2011 he did set a timeframe when he expressed his hope that he will be in charge at Old Trafford for three more years.

I think if City win the league again and comfortably this time he will call it a day and say footballs changed too much and he cant keep up anymore etc.. But no doubt he will want to leave on a high this year and really go for it. It will be hard for united once he's gone as he has been the reason behind a lot of their titles as he has the ability to win titles with a team with only 1 or 2 world class players in. Not many can do it.

all managers wish to leave on a high note. i think win or lose he will leave.
SAF would ever use the "football has changed" statement. his shown he is very good at adapting to new styles. his teams show it.

but you are right, not many can win titles with 1 or 2 big name players.

but i think if man united get a new coach and keep him long term, united will be ok. its changing coaches like chelsea do thats the problem. there is no stability and the manager doesnt have adequate time to put his plans into action. keep in mind it took SAF 4 years at MUFC to win 1 trophy. if SAF was coach of chelsea of today he'd be gone in no time.

I don't think he will leave in a year. Just one more year? No way. His time is ending that there is no doubt finally, but i think he'll have 2 more seasons MINIMUM to complete his final team.

Not until his latest baby is ready and the younger players have stepped up into the first team permanently i.e Jones, Smalling, Welbeck, Rafael etc and he adds a couple more youngsters to the squad this summer.

Then he will have the squad to see the next 3 or 4 years after he finishes are mostly taken care of, and transition to a new manager slowly. It'll be an easing out, with him likely going upstairs or being an advisor to the new manager. This may seem out of the ordinary, but this WOULD be a unique situation.

Manchester United require stability, and only a manager who had shown commitment would be considered.

I can easily see someone like David Moyes coming in. He has done near miracles with nothing at Everton, imagine what could be accomplished with money. Ferguson is well known to be a long time admirer of his style and work ethic, being a fellow Scot.

Not only that, Moyes has spent over a decade at Everton. He is the third longest serving manager from all the 4 professional English football leagues. That is the sort of stability literally money cannot buy. He won't be 50 until next year, and could easily last 15 years at a club like United.

Hopefully, he can end his career on a high note. Even though mou just renewed his contract with RM, i can see him saying bye bye next year and going to Manchester U.

Anderson84346d ago

he would cost too much to break the contract i'd say pep or a ex united player would get it.. maybe blanc or solskjaer

shadowraiden4346d ago

It will be David Moyes taking over unless in the next couple of years one of the ex united players who now manage have a good couple of seasons(my best bet is solksjaer out of the lot)

but those saying one year is crazy he still has work to do and wont leave untill he feels he has made a team that dominates for years like the past teams so that the next manager can come in much easier and slowly work his magic
