Liverpool the favourites to sign Xabi Alonso this summer

Liverpool are the 7/2 favourites to sign Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid this summer with reports of a return to Anfield gathering pace.

The Spanish international was a firm fans favourite at Liverpool of course and many were disappointed when he completed a £30m move to Real Madrid in August 2009.

Alonso's future at the La Liga club is far from certain though with new contract talks not going to plan in the last few months.

Back in April it was reported that the 31-year-old was offered a new two-year deal to keep Liverpool at bay, but nothing has been signed.

The player has always spoken highly of Liverpool too and as you may expect Brendan Rodgers is desperate to re-unite him with Gerrard in midfield.

Should Alonso become available though, other top clubs are bound to show an interest at the very least. This includes Chelsea and Bayern Munich. (Transfers)

Like the guy QUALITY player, but not sure this is a good move... when you look at price, wage & age

Like the guy. But not sure LFC needs another CM, especially on a high wage, unless they plan to sell Allen, Henderson, etc. Anyway, Gerrard is doing the Alonso-role quite well currently. Besides, LFC needs quality CBs and wide players more.

Chelsea needs him more than Liverpool.

I thought Xabi had already confirmed he was staying at Madrid?

Why would he want to go to a mid-table team? Surely the man does not want to go from winning trophies and into winning virtually nothing.
