Caledonian Mercury: “Sout piel” is a derogatory term that Afrikaaners sometimes use to describe British South Africans. The term originated from the perception that, unlike the Dutch “volk” who settled permanently in the Cape, other European settlers kept their options open and tended to retain strong ties with the land of their birth.
