For Werder Bremen, the opening seven matches of the Bundesliga season have been something of a false start. The Hanseaten, who qualified for the Champions League last year, are struggling in 13th place at the moment, and sit a full 13 points behind leaders Mainz.
According to Bild, Werder have frozen their players' wages in response to the team's poor performance. Allegedly, prior to their 3-2 victory over Hamburg, players were informed that their salaries for September would be cut by 50%.
