After a week in the gathering storm surrounding Wayne Rooney, Sir Alex Ferguson no doubt looked upon a trip to Ewood Park as a chance to take his mind off his troubles. No such luck. As Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland ground each other to a stalemate, the Manchester United manager’s only distraction came in sheltering from the rain and sleet.

The dismissal of Christopher Samba threatened briefly to raise the pulse, but even with Sam Allardyce’s team reduced to 10 men, they suffocated and stultified their guests.
