However, Atletico had to survive a few anxious moments thereafter but secured the win midway through the second-half when just a minute after coming on striker Sergio Aguero found the target. The Argentina international then produced a brilliant flick on 78 minutes for Diego Costa who found the net from close range to add the cherry on the cake.

Bayer Leverkusen maintained their unbeaten run in the Europa League this campaign as they drew 0-0 with Aris in Greece. The stalemate also means that Aris have maintained their proud record of not losing a European fixture at home since 1968.
