Birmingham beat Brentford on penalties

As their home ground is noted for having a public house on each of its four corners, fans of Brentford need not have strayed too far to celebrate a famous victory at St Andrew's on Tuesday night. The League One side certainly were in touching distance of creating their own piece of history in the Carling Cup before Birmingham City cruelly dashed that moment of glory by prevailing in a penalty shoot out.

When Craig Woodman's spot kick was nudged over his own by bar by goalkeeper Maik Taylor, the save denied Brentford the chance to progress to the quarter finals of this competition for the first time, eclipsing the class of 1982/83.
