Malmo claim Allsvenkan title

Malmo have been crowned Swedish champions after triumphing in their hotly contested Allsvenskan title-hunt with Helsingborg. The sides went into the final day of the season this afternoon level on points, with Malmo ahead on goal difference, but Helsingborg were held to a goalless draw with Kalmar FF.

The championship win gives Malmo only their second title in 21 years, their last coming in 2004, since their dominance in Sweden during the late 1980s. Their win was sealed by beating Mjallby 2-0, with Jiloan Hamad's 17th minute strike setting them on their way before Agon Mehmeti doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time.

That win lifted them to 67 points, two clear of Helsingborg, who suffered a frustrating afternoon at home, knowing that the longer their game remained 0-0 with Kalmar, the more their title hopes dwindled.

The story is too old to be commented.
