Schalke moved away from danger at the bottom of the Bundesliga after winning 1-0 at Mainz in a game which saw both sides miss penalties.
Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Andre Schurrle were the guilty men from the spot, but Jefferson Farfan showed more accuracy with the only goal of the game after half an hour to take Felix Magath's side up to 10th - their highest league position of the season.
