Expectations were high in Amsterdam at the start of the season. Ajax had only just missed out on the Eredivisie title in 2009-10, and they seemed to be favourites to finally clinch their 30th league title this term, especially bearing in mind that sought-after players such as Maarten Stekelenburg, Jan Vertonghen, Gregory van der Wiel and Luis Suarez all stayed in the Amsterdam ArenA.
