Manchester City: 5 Reasons the Blues Shouldn't Sign Robin Van Persie

Robin Van Persie is making all the headlines these days. His name is heating up in transfer rumors after he publicly stated his intent to leave Arsenal.

With the European transfer window now open, it is very likely that Arsene Wenger will try to cash in on RVP, who has only one year remaining on his current contract in London.  

While Manchester City has been linked with the Dutch striker for a long time, here are five reasons why it shouldn't and won't sign Robin Van Persie.  

Now that City are EPL champions, they will likely set their aspirations towards Europe.  

The Citizens did not fare too well in either the Champions League or Europa this past season.  While the City squad is extremely talented, it is lacking depth in a few areas—mostly in defense.  

As I have written, City lacks quality in depth in central defense.  

With Kolo Toure aging and struggling to find time, he is on the outs in Manchester.  Stefan Savic is young and inexperienced and was frankly unimpressive in his first season in England.  

Man City need another capable defender in their squad.  

Another potential hole for the blues would be the left-back position.  

Aleksander Kolarov is looking for first team play and is considering an exit from the Eastlands, according to The Sun.  Mancini will be looking to fill this void if Kolarov does indeed depart.  

Lastly, Manchester could use another defensive midfielder.  

Gareth Barry and Yaya Toure played well together, while Nigel De Jong had a rather dismal season and failed to feature often.  Mancini also continued to experiment with Toure in a more attacking position, and this held great success.  

Until these needs are met, a striker should be the last of City's focus.

After a few years of endless overspending, Mancini finally has somewhat of a budget.

Whether this is believable or not is yet to be seen, but Roberto Mancini did seek cheaper solutions in January by signing David Pizarro on loan from Roma, rather than making a splash with a big name.

The wage and transfer fees that Van Persie would command may actually drive City away from this potential deal.  For once.

This seems like clockwork, but before the start of each new season, Man City has to find homes for a few stars that were lured to the Eastlands with huge weekly wages.  

Players such as Wayne Bridge, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz all need new loan deals.  These contracts are so massive that teams are willing to take only small portions of those fees.  

City needs to find permanent homes for all of these unwanted players before making any big splash this transfer window.

Despite having incredible skill and strike record, Van Persie has been injury-prone.  

In fact, this was his first EPL season since 2008 in which he started more than 20 games.

Nothing against RVP; he is world class.

Nevertheless, this is a lot of money to put into a striker that has suffered from injury throughout his career. 

For a team that normally employs one true striker, Manchester City already has more than enough attacking power.  

Carlos Tevez, Eden Dzeko, Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero have each come up big for the Blues.  In fact, three of these four strikers round out the top 10 EPL scorers of last season.  It is also worth mentioning that Adebayor came fourth in goals and is still under contract with City.  

With four or five forwards, why is there any need to spend ridiculous amounts of money on yet another striker?  

The simplest answer is that there isn't.  This is a want, not a need at any level.

While Van Persie is looking for titles, I do not believe he will find them with Manchester City. 

City is best to pass on this unnecessary target and to focus on filling in the few holes they still have on their impressive roster.
