World Football: Power Ranking the 8 Olympic Quarterfinalists

0 of 8

The final eight for the men's Olympic soccer tournament in London has been set, and there are a few surprises.

Pre-tournament favorites Spain were eliminated after their second match in Group D and finished last in the group while Japan and Honduras advanced to the quarterfinals.

Another surprise team to not make the tournament's knockout stage was Uruguay, who crashed out of Group A on Wednesday finishing third behind hosts Great Britain and Senegal.

The other four teams that advanced were Mexico and South Korea from Group B and Brazil and Egypt out of Group C.

Here are how the eight remaining teams rank with the top team being the favorite to win gold in London.

8. Honduras

Honduras has been the surprise of the Olympic tournament after finishing in second place out of Group D.

The CONCACAF nation began to believe in themselves after beating Spain by a 1-0 score in the second group game.

After a scoreless draw with Japan, they were able to advance to the knockout phase to take on Brazil at St. James' Park in Newcastle.

One problem for Honduras is that the country only has one goal scorer so far as Jerry Bengston of the New England Revolution in MLS has all three Honduran goals in the tournament.

7. Senegal

Senegal has also had only one goal scorer in the Olympic Games so far, and he is the leading goal scorer in the tournament.

Moussa Konate has all four Senegalese goals as has led them out of Group A with five points and a second-place finish.

Senegal will now go to Wembley Stadium on Saturday as gigantic underdogs as they go up against Mexico in the next round.

6. South Korea

South Korea advanced to the quarterfinals after two scoreless draws and a win over Switzerland.

One of the goal scorers in that Switzerland game was Park Chu-Young, who was a great disappointment for Arsenal last season after moving from Monaco.

Park and his teammates drew with Mexico and Gabon in Group B to earn five points and second place.

South Korea now face the toughest challenge other than Brazil, the host nation Great Britain in Cardiff on Saturday.

5. Japan

4 of 8

Japan pulled off the shock of the tournament in their first game after beating Spain in the 34th minute with a goal from Yuki Otsu.

Japan then won their second game by the same 1-0 scoreline over Morocco before playing to a 0-0 draw with Honduras on Wednesday.

But, even as Group D winners, the Asian nation goes into Saturday's match at Old Trafford as underdogs against Egypt.

4. Egypt

Egypt have rebounded from a rough start in their first match to advance to the quarterfinals.

Egypt almost came back to earn a point against Brazil in game one but eventually lost 3-2 to the group winners.

After a 1-1 draw with lowly New Zealand, Egypt recovered and took care of Belarus with a 3-1 win at Hampden Park on Wednesday.

Now, they will go into the what will likely be the most competitive of all four quarterfinals against Japan at Old Trafford.

3. Great Britain

6 of 8

Great Britain benefited from the support of their home fans and the collapse of Uruguay to win Group A.

After tying with Senegal, Team GB beat UAE like they were supposed to and then took down Uruguay to top the group.

However, they are still a mostly English side, and we know how well the English do in knockout rounds of major tournaments.

So do not be surprised if Team GB loses on penalties in the quarterfinals.

2. Mexico

7 of 8

Mexico easily won Group B with seven points.

Wins over Gabon and Switzerland gave El Tri the majority of their points.

The reward for finishing first in their group is playing Senegal at Wembley on Saturday.

There is no doubt that they player to watch on this team is Giovani Dos Santos, who can not perform at the club level but is one heck of an international player.

1. Brazil

8 of 8

This tournament is Brazil's to lose now that Spain and Uruguay are out.

The Selecao were the only team to win all three group games as they were dominant throughout Group C play.

The 20-year-old star, Neymar, has shown pieces of brilliance including his free-kick goal against Belarus.

Neymar is not the only blossoming superstar on this team with Lucas, Oscar, Leandro Damiao and Hulk in the squad just to name a few.

Brazil should get by Honduras easily and should not struggle with either Great Britain or South Korea in the semifinals.

The only real challenge they will face will be from Mexico if the two nations collide at Wembley on Aug. 11 for the final.
