Alberto Aquilani has finally put an end to his frustrating three-year spell with Liverpool, the Reds have confirmed via their official web site.

The Italian, who joined Liverpool in 2009, failed to make himself a regular at Anfield and spent the last two seasons on loan to Juventus and Milan. After failing to impress Brendan Rodgers during the club's preseason tour, Aquilani will join Serie A side Fiorentina on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

But what does his departure mean for the Reds?

Simply put, it means the Rodgers revolution has begun.

Liverpool are trying to trim their wage bill to make room for new arrivals, and other expensive flops (Joe Cole, Andy Carroll) could also be shown the door. Once the squad players are sold, Rodgers can finally get the players he wants: Joe Allen and Clint Dempsey.

However, the Reds have lost one of the best passers in Aquilani—the Italian midfielder successfully completed 87 percent of his passes last season, recording six assists along the way. The 28-year-old playmaker could have fit seamlessly in the tiki-taka possession style of play, but Rodgers decided that the Italian wasn't worth the money he was getting.

The Reds have lost a top-class player, but, truth be told, Aquilani was never in Liverpool's plans. And the Aquilani transfer will now go down in history as yet another of Liverpool's transfer failures.

The Rodgers revolution has taken its first victim, and if Liverpool don't get any reinforcements in the midfield, the Anfield faithful cannot expect a top-four finish.

What do you think? Could the sale of Aquilani prompt Liverpool into making more signings?
