Tottenham Transfer News: Adebayor Situation Emphasizes Spurs' Striker Crisis

Over the past few weeks, much of the buzz surrounding Tottenham has been about Luka Modric and his potential move to Real Madrid.

This is quite understandable. After all, the Croatian midfielder has proven himself a superstar, has plenty career ahead of him as he is just 26 years of age and has made the situation quite interesting with his diva behavior.

While that situation has been dragging on, though, another story has slipped under the radar. It's a story that Spurs supporters might want to be equally, if not more, concerned about.

That story is the saga involving Tottenham and striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Last season, Adebayor led Spurs in scoring with 17 Premier League goals and 18 total while on loan from Manchester City.

Given the already crowded striker situation at City, it was expected that the striker would leave his club this summer and join Tottenham.

However, after Spurs and City reportedly agreed to a fee for him, Ade has been holding up the permanent move to White Hart Lane in hopes for more wages.

According to the Mirror, Tottenham has given up on negotiations with the striker and have moved on to other targets, such as Brazilian Leandro Damiao.

So why is this such a big deal?

Well, as of right now, Tottenham has two strikers in their first team squad.

One is Mexican Giovani dos Santos. In four years at White Hart Lane, dos Santos has played 13 matches for the club and has made his desire to leave the club clear.

The other is Jermain Defoe. Last season, the 29-year-old Defoe started just 11 league matches.

Clearly, these are not the two steadiest options, and yet they are currently the only two options.

To be fair, Tottenham does have some promising young strikers coming through.

19-year-old Harry Kane has been getting plenty of playing time in preseason, 17-year-old Ivorian Souleymane Coulibaly scored against Stevenage a few weeks ago and 19-year-old Cameron Lancaster came on in a league match last season.

However, while these players have bright futures ahead of them, they cannot be counted upon at this inexperienced stage of their careers, which allows the problems surrounding the present persist.

Meanwhile, multiple bids for Damiao have failed while Spurs have yet to come very close to signing other players.

If Tottenham signed Adebayor, they would in all likelihood have to sign at least one more striker to round out the squad.

However, without the Togoan, Spurs are in need of a few forwards' signatures.

With less than two weeks and four weeks until their opening match and the close of the transfer window, respectively, Tottenham must move fast.
