New Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has cleared the air with how his club stands on the future of Daniel Agger, and doing so was a massive step in the right direction no matter what they decide to do.

Rodgers told Goal.com's David Lynch how he feels about Agger and that he's hopeful to keep the 27-year-old at Anfield.

"I like to have a playmaker in behind and Daniel, this is his game, building from behind, stepping in with the ball and making passes. For me there’s no update because we don’t want to sell him."

"He’s a player who’s very important for me and will remain that way." - Rodgers said via a Goal.com report.

The Reds have had trouble holding onto important pieces in the past, which has been a primary component to their gradual recession in the Premier League. Losing Agger would be among the most detrimental losses to the club in recent years and would set back the massive rebuilding and reloading process that Rodgers is in the midst of.

At 27 years old, Agger is in his prime and has proven to be one of the strongest and most skillful centre-backs in the world.

This obviously catches the interest of big-spending Premier League champions Manchester City, who have been linked to Agger so much so that Rodgers had to put out a statement on City's interest (per Daily Mail).

Even if an Agger-to-City move is inevitable, Rodgers' statement on his star defender will undoubtedly spurn the market and cause for a massive deal to be the only thing that plucks Agger out of Anfield.

Liverpool are making all of the right moves in the transfer window and their work seems to be far from done at the moment. If they're going to be able to muster up a starting 11 that can contend for a Champions League spot, Agger will have to be anchoring the backline.

The Reds can still move in the right direction with their rebuilding efforts by moving Agger, but it will be a summer or two before they reap those rewards. Anything better than a top-six finish would be miraculous and unlikely if they lose this world-class defender who has shined in recent years, even throughout Liverpool's shortcomings.

By ensuring his hopes to hold on to Agger, Rodgers did a masterful job of working the transfer window that his club has been an active part of.

They've hardly played any games under their skipper, but the new boss looks like he knows what he's doing and will get Liverpool back near the top of the pack before long, with or without Agger.
