05.20.11 at 10:37 amThe Blue RoomBig believer in litnetg them figure it out for themselves. We have one and she started in a bassinet in our room, but once she was not nursing every 2-3 hours, she was moved to the crib in her room. We toughed it out for a few days (maybe a week). I was consistently told by the wife to stand down as my impulse was strong to go get her. I remember the first day she slept through: I heard her crying in the next room, rolled over, looked at the clock and saw it was already 6 a.m. smelled like . . . . victory. Also, at about 9 months we started putting her in her crib awake at bed time. Again, there was a week of listening to her sob through the monitor, but now she knows the drill and more or less self-soothes. It's to the point now, where our daughter doesn't even see our bed as a place where she can sleep. There have been times where she has been sick overnight and it would have been easy to co-sleep, but she insists on being in her crib for sleeping. Our only challenge now is what to do when we travel. The pack n play is clearly not up to her standards and we don't travel enough to have developed any routines with it.All credit to the wife. She was the driving force behind this. My daughter already knows she owns my ass, but mommy layed down the law on both of us and the results were unquestionably worth the short-term pain. I highly encourage all parents to at least try it and not just for one night. Suffer for a few nights and you might be surprised by your child's adaptability (indeed, you and/or your spouse will likely be the ones having more trouble adjusting). The other thing you may learn in this process (I know we did) is the difference between your child's cry when something is wrong (earache, fever, teething) and your child's cry because she is complaining or whining deal with the former, ignore the latter.
