Premier League Preview: Top 15 Signings to Watch This Season

0 of 15

The new English Premier League season is only days away, but the transfers keep coming.

The deals will continue through the end of the month, but it's already been a busy summer for big-money, big-name moves.

Chelsea have been active again, while Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United have also been busy. Champions Manchester City have made just one deal, but that could change in the coming days.

Here are the top 15 signings (so far) to watch this season.

Robin van Persie

1 of 15

Details: Arsenal to Manchester United (pending personal terms) for £24 million (BBC Sport)

Why to watch: Robin van Persie led the league with 30 goals last season.

RvP has battled injuries (often losing) throughout his career, but at age 29, he seems to be in his prime. Will that help Manchester United regain the title?

Eden Hazard

2 of 15

Details: Lille to Chelsea for £32 million (Guardian)

Why to watch: Belgian winger Eden Hazard was one of the two or three biggest names in the transfer market last season.

After a long, silly, drawn-out courtship with several teams, Hazard finally decided on Chelsea. Now it's time to see if he can live up to the hype.

Oscar

3 of 15

Details: Internacional to Chelsea for £25 million (Daily Telegraph)

Why to watch: He's another big-money signing for Chelsea, and he'll find the midfield crowded at Stamford Bridge, but Oscar looks to be a shrewd signing.

Oscar's passing and assists for Brazil at the Olympics were top-class, and at only 20, he has a bright, bright future ahead.

Lukas Podolski

4 of 15

Details: FC Köln to Arsenal for undisclosed fee (BBC Sport)

Why to watch: Robin van Persie is now officially gone. Arsenal must reload.

Lukas Podolski looks like a strong candidate to be the Gooners' new fan favorite. If he can keep the goals coming like the one he scored the other day against his former club, he'll fit right in.

Olivier Giroud

5 of 15

Details: Montpellier to Arsenal for £12 million (BBC Sport)

Why to watch: Again, Robin van Persie is gone. Arsenal must reload.

French striker Olivier Giroud should be the new target man. Big, strong, unselfish and relatively inexpensive, he seems like an ideal Arsene Wenger signing.

Santi Cazorla

6 of 15

Details: Malaga to Arsenal for £16 million (Independent)

Why to watch: Again, Robin van Persie is gone. Arsenal must reload.

With Santi Cazorla, though, it's more like replacing Cesc Fabregas or Samir Nasri. The Spanish midfielder can play multiple midfield spots, but his best value to the Gunners could be as a playmaker.

And while £16 million is a lot for Arsenal, it represents a bit of shrewd business, considering Malaga's financial woes.

Shinji Kagawa

7 of 15

Details: Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United for £12-17 million (BBC Sport)

Why to watch: Borussia Dortmund are the two-time defending Bundesliga champs, and midfielder Shinji Kagawa played a major role in that run.

Before Robin van Persie joined, Kagawa was United's big signing of the summer. He'll be expected to help stabilize a United midfield that had its share of problems last season.

Marko Marin

8 of 15

Details: Werder Bremen to Chelsea for €8 million (Guardian)

Why to watch: Competition for playing time in Chelsea's midfield will be fierce.

Marko Marin, a German international, is an outstanding player, but can he secure regular playing time?

Gylfi Sigurdsson

9 of 15

Details: Hoffenheim to Tottenham Hotspur for £8 million (Goal.com)

Why to watch: Gylfi Sigurdsson ranked among the Premier League's best performers during the second half of last season. That came in a brief loan cameo with Swansea City.

Now Sigurdsson, a 22-year-old Icelandic midfielder, has joined a big club. Can he keep the big performances coming?

Fabio Borini

10 of 15

Details: AS Roma to Liverpool for £11 million (Liverpool Echo)

Why to watch: The Brendan Rodgers revolution is under way at Liverpool. Rodgers' first signing was Italian forward Fabio Borini.

Borini, 21, scored nine times in 24 league appearances for AS Roma last season. That means he's inexperienced, but it also hints at some decent scoring potential.

And Liverpool needed goals badly last season.

Joe Allen

11 of 15

Details: Swansea City to Liverpool for €19 million (Goal.com)

Why to watch: Brendan Rodgers, who previously managed midfielder Joe Allen at Swansea City, has said Allen is so good, some might mistake him for a Spaniard (Daily Telegraph).

If that doesn't pique your interest, what will?

Jan Vertonghen

12 of 15

Details: Ajax to Tottenham Hotspur for €12 million (Guardian)

Why to watch: Ledley King has retired, so Tottenham's defense is in transition.

Enter Jan Vertonghen, who helped lead Ajax to back-to-back Eredivisie titles the last two seasons.

Even if (or should we say when?) Luka Modric leaves for Real Madrid, the Andre Villas-Boas era is starting well for Spurs.

Park Ji-Sung

13 of 15

Details: Manchester United to Queens Park Rangers for £2-5 million (BBC Sport)

Why to watch: Park Ji-Sung often performed well for Manchester United in big matches, but he wasn't ever really a regular in the midfield.

He'll be that at QPR, a club that barely avoided relegation last season. What's more, both Park and QPR will be expected to improve their circumstances considerably this term.

Jack Rodwell

14 of 15

Details: Everton to Manchester City for £15 million (Guardian)

Why to watch: Midfielder Jack Rodwell is big-spending Manchester City's only signing so far this season.

So does that mean Roberto Mancini is so confident in his squad that a bevy of new signings wasn't necessary? Or does that hint at how highly City might regard Rodwell?

Or does it mean nothing of the sort?

Hugo Rodallega

15 of 15

Details: Wigan to Fulham on free transfer (BBC Sport)

Why to watch: At times in his Premier League career, Colombian forward Hugo Rodallega has lit up the highlight reel and disappointed bitterly.

Rodallega clearly needed a change of scenery, but will Fulham prove the correct destination?
