Ferguson gets his man on a four-year contract

Manchester United have completed the £24million signing of star striker Robin van Persie from Arsenal on a four-year deal. Van Persie travelled to Manchester on Thursday to finalise personal terms and undergo a medical and has now put pen to paper on a contract at Old Trafford to put one of the summer's biggest transfer sagas to rest. The Holland international, last season's Premier League top scorer with 30 goals, announced shortly after Euro 2012 he would not be extending his contract with the Gunners, which had just 12 months left to run. United, Manchester City and Juventus were all targeting the 29-year-old but it is Sir Alex Ferguson's side who have won the race for his signature.

World-class striker

Ferguson had said on Thursday he expects Van Persie to make his United debut in their Premier League opener against Everton on Monday evening and is delighted to have got his man. The United boss told his club's official website: "Robin is a world-class striker with a proven record in England and in European football. "His talents need no introduction to our fans. He has scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his former club. His movement, finishing and all-round ability are outstanding." Van Persie will now be tasked with combining with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck as United seek to wrestle the league title back from Manchester City. And he said: "It's an honour to sign for Manchester United. "I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can't wait to get started."
