EPL Opening Weekend's Biggest Winners and Losers

0 of 4

Finally, the Premier League is back. We were treated to 24 goals over the weekend, but who was left smiling and who was left crying?

There were mixed fortunes for the new managers around the league. Brendan Rodgers, Paul Lambert and Andre Villas-Boas all had tough starts at their new clubs as they all lost on the road.

Chris Hughton has a lot of work to do at Norwich after he saw his side get steamrolled 5-0 by Martin Jol's Fulham.

Meanwhile, Michael Laudrup and Steve Clarke both enjoyed stunning starts at Swansea and West Brom, respectively.

There was controversy for Alan Pardew, as a win over Spurs was overshadowed by a push on a linesman which could result in Pardew being banned.

It was a good couple of days for the newly promoted teams. West Ham returned to the top flight with a win over Aston Villa. Reading rescued a point against Stoke with a last-minute Adam Le Fondre penalty. On Sunday, Southampton came within 10 minutes of taking a point against champions Manchester City.

But who were the biggest winners and losers after the first games of the season? Agree or disagree? Comment below.

Biggest Winner: Michael Laudrup

1 of 4

Michael Laudrup's task looked like a tall one when he arrived at Swansea. Keeping the club in the top flight for a second year in a row was never going to be easy.

The Dane could not have gotten off to a better start, as his side demolished QPR away from home 5-0. New signing Michu was gifted his first goal in English football when Rob Green allowed his long-range effort in.

The Spaniard's second was well taken, and he already looks to be a fine signing. Laudrup's other new men Chico and Jonathan De Guzman also performed well on their debuts.

Overall, it could not have been a better entrance into the Premier League for Laudrup.

2nd-Biggest Winner: West Brom

After becoming renowned as one of the best coaches in the Premier League, Steve Clarke will be extremely happy with his first game as the manager.

His West Brom side took full advantage of a visiting Liverpool side that went down to 10 men when Daniel Agger was sent off after 57 minutes.

The Baggies made the extra man count, keeping the ball with ease and waiting for the right opportunities to attack.

Romelu Lukaku looked very lively on his debut, coming on as a substitute. The Belgian scored the third goal with a close-range header and looked far too powerful for Jamie Carragher.

If any West Brom fans were worried following the departure of Roy Hodgson, then Saturday's result will have done much to calm their nerves.

Biggest Loser: Liverpool

3 of 4

Liverpool showed no signs of being a team ready to challenge for the top four again as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of West Brom.

The club has continued their trend of overpaying for British talent, and new recruit Joe Allen looked like he will have a similar impact this season as Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam did last year.

Of course, it is too early to draw conclusions after just one match, but the partnership of Luis Suarez and Franco Borini up front looks like it will need time to gel. Suarez cut a frustrated figure in the second half, and Borini struggled to have any impact on the game at all.

2nd-Biggest Loser: QPR's Defence

4 of 4

If the defending for Queens Park Rangers doesn't improve very quickly, then it could be a very long season for the fans at Loftus Road.

All good defences start with the keeper, and it was a day to forget for Robert Green. The former England No. 1 struggled in the preseason matches, and his form continued into his league debut.

Just eight minutes into the game, Green suffered the kind of mistake that will keep him awake all week. A speculative first-time shot from Swansea's Michu looked like it would require just a routine save, but Green could only get the slightest of touches on it and the ball nestled into the corner of the net.

Green's day was made to look worse by another great performance from his opposing keeper Michel Vorm.

It was not just Green who had a bad day, though: The entire back four looked like they had never played together, as they allowed Swansea chance after chance in the second half.

This was summed up by the second goal for Nathan Dyer. The winger was all alone when he met a Kemy Agustien pass to make it 4-0.

There will need to be a drastic improvement in their next game against Norwich. With the following games against Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham, the season could start getting away from QPR before they know it.
