Manchester City Transfers: 6 Deadline-Day Targets for the Defending EPL Champs

0 of 6

With the window winding to its always-climactic finish, Manchester City are enduring one of their quieter transfer periods in recent memory.

Roberto Mancini has made just one purchase so far in the form of England youngster Jack Rodwell, but the Italian is bound to conduct more business.

Since the Abu Dhabi takeover of 2008, City’s expenditures during the winter and summer transfer windows have skyrocketed.

In these final few days to spend, will we see a massive jump in spending by the Premier League champions, or are they adopting a more economical approach ahead of Financial Fair Play?

Regardless, here are six targets that the Citizens may make a move for in the dying days of August.

Daniel Agger

Currently out of commission following his red card at West Brom last weekend, it’s become no secret that Manchester City are interested in Liverpool stalwart Daniel Agger.

The Danish international has evolved into one of the Reds’ best defenders in recent seasons and has stated that he is happy to remain at Anfield (via Andy Hunter of The Guardian).

Speculation linking Agger with a move to the Etihad Stadium appears to have gone slightly cold in recent days after the Merseysiders revealed just how much they were seeking to part with their centre-back (via Metro).

City are allegedly close to organising the sale of Kolo Toure (via Daily Mail), a departure that will free up wages as well as the necessary squad space for an Agger arrival.

Joleon Lescott and Vincent Kompany currently occupy City’s centre of defence, but Agger would certainly challenge for a starting spot if he were to complete a last-minute move to City.

Edinson Cavani

Linked with just about every club able to afford his purchase, Edinson Cavani remains one of the most sought after talents in Europe.

Even with their wealth of attacking options, City remain as one of the parties interested in the Uruguayan international (via Goal.com).

Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko and Roque Santa Cruz all call the Etihad Stadium home at the moment, but the Premier League champions may yet improve that attacking line once more.

In just over 100 appearances for Napoli, Cavani has managed to poke home on 66 occasions, and he's showing no signs of slowing down.

A striker on everyone's shopping list: Edinson Cavani.

Scott Sinclair

Scott SInclair is probably the most likely candidate on this list to go on and complete a move to Manchester City before the end of August.

According to BBC Sport, Manchester City have had a bid for the 23-year-old accepted and are now just ironing out the technicalities and rough edges.

Although there is great midfield and attacking talent at the club already, there aren't many out-and-out wingers or speed merchants at the Etihad.

Therefore, Sinclair's arrival really wouldn't be as insane as a lot of people are making out.

Granted, the youngster may not get a great deal of first-team football, but the pursuit of the Premier League title holders shows that they're focused on building on their signature of Jack Rodwell to create a dynasty of young English talent.

Javi Martinez

With his projected move to Bayern Munich now looking uncertain, recent days have seen media outlets reignite the link between Javi Martinez and Manchester City.

The Sky Blues were being linked with the Spaniard in January, but a move failed to come about, and the purchase seemed to look even less likely after it was announced that Athletic Bilbao would only sell their star if a side were to meet his release clause value.

That sum currently stands at around €40m, and after a slow summer, City could really hit the wallet hard with a splash for Martinez.

The Daily Mail suggest that Roberto Mancini would be hoping to step up where Bayern could not if the German giants failed to organise a move.

David Luiz

With Marouane Fellaini proving just what an outlandish hairstyle can do at Everton, Manchester City may yet decide "We want one of those" and facilitate a transfer for David Luiz this summer.

According to reports (via The Sun, h/t The Independent), Manchester CIty have already had a £30m offer for the Brazilian international rejected, but might come back with a deadline-day offer.

Chelsea have slightly more options than City when it comes to the centre of defence, and Mancini could decide that cover is greatly needed.

It's unclear as to how much Chelsea would need to part company with their Sideshow Bob lookalike, but it's safe to say that City have the ability to meet it.

Theo Walcott

6 of 6

Currently in the final year of his contract at the Emirates Stadium, speculation is suggesting that Arsenal could sell Theo Walcott this summer if they fail to agree terms over a new deal.

The Englishman is reportedly seeking wages of £100,000 a week, but Walcott may end up plying his trade elsewhere if he wasn't to get that.

The Sun reports that Arsenal could sell their winger this summer rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in 2013.

One thing for sure is that City certainly could offer the player the wages he desires, but it's yet to be seen whether they'd be willing to spend the necessary amount on his signature.

A deadline day move can't be ruled out yet, and should Scott Sinclair's proposed transfer fall through, Walcott might be a more expensive alternative.
