As a Everton fan I’m feeling a rather strange sensation.
Usually at this point in the season Blues fans are talking about crisis and the team having made a terrible start to the season.
However, Everton have made a superb start to the season and it really is foreign territory for me.
Impressive
What has been so impressive about the first two victories is that Everton have won the games with such style.
The Toffee’s may use the height and strength of the outstanding Marouane Fellaini, but at times against Manchester United and Aston Villa they have played some fantastic football.
Don’t shout it too loud but Everton are more than just a long ball team. The likes of Steven Pienaar, Leon Osman and Marouane Fellaini are superb with the ball at their feet and Everton have the ability to out pass most teams in the Premier League.
Surprise?
Is it a surprise that Everton are playing so well? No not really, the only surprise to me is that the team has started performing before their Christmas dinner. I think as David Moyes joked earlier this summer, that they have had their Christmas party early this season.
Pessimist
As a Everton fan you have to get used to more ups and downs than a rollercoaster and it has made a lot of Everton fans very pessimistic. Unfortunately, nearly 30 years of supporting Everton has got me thinking that the wheels are going to fall off at any point.
Positive
On a more positive note though Everton have looked like a team that could threaten the established order this season. Last season Everton defeated Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham at Goodison Park and opened this season with a very rare home victory over Manchester United and a win at bogey team Aston Villa to boot.
The whole mood around the Everton camp seems positive, despite my inherent pessimism. The team is playing well, the fans as always are up for the challenge and the boss seems happier than he has done for along time. Sounds like a winning combination to me.
Squad
My fear for Everton this season is that they get injuries to key players and we haven’t really got the strength-in-depth to cover key players being out injured. David Moyes starting 11 would give anybody in the top flight a game, especially at Goodison but the squad lacks depth.
Moyes has worked miracles on what’s laughingly called a transfer budget and hopefully he can bring in a few fresh faces before the transfer window shuts on Friday night. If he can then this could be a very good season for the Toffee’s and their fans.
Bright
Unlike a lot of recent summers in the history of Everton Football Club this has been quite a bright one. Previous summers have saw doom and gloom merchants spouting that Everton are going to get relegated.
However, this summer has been bright for Everton fans. The signing of Steven Naismith and permanent signing of Steven Pienaar look to be very shrewd moves by David Moyes. The loss of Everton hero Tim Cahill and young Jack Rodwell really were for the best of the club.
With the money received from the sale of Rodwell to Manchester City Moyes has managed to signed highly-rated Belgian attacker Kevin Mirallas from Olympiakos. The 24 year-old was also being chased by Arsenal and from training ground reports sounds like he could be another shrewd signing from MR Moyes.
The Scot is still believed to have money in his transfer kitty and is on the lookout for fresh additions to his very promising squad. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few new players heading into Goodison before the transfer window slams shut on Friday.
Europe
Everton have not only started the season in fine style, but they ended last season in the same manner they do every campaign, in outstanding form. On their day Everton can beat any team in the Premier League, they have proven that over the last couple of seasons.
It is only early days in the season, but Everton have the quality to finish in the top six of the Premier League. Whisper it quietly but I think Everton could be about to upset the Premier League applecart and it’s about time too.
