English Premier League Transfers: 10 Biggest Deals to Expect on Deadline Day

Transfer deadline day: love it or hate it, you just know that some Premier League clubs have left their best business until the last possible moment.

Whether because they are hoping to drive down the price of their favoured target by offering a take-it-or-leave-it deal to a want-away player's club or because they have suffered poor early results and are panicked into bringing in two or three reinforcements, deadline day always provides good entertainment.

These transfers mark the last—barring free transfers or emergency loans—players who will arrive into Premier League clubs until January.

Transfer deadline day is on Friday—here are 10 transfers the Premier League can still expect to see happen as the clock ticks toward 11 p.m. BST on that day.

Liverpool forward Andy Carroll is still being linked with a move back to his hometown club, Newcastle United.

Just a few days ago Reds manager Brendan Rodgers said the North East club were taking a "liberty" by trying to take record signing Carroll on loan, but it still seems as though Liverpool will offload him if they receive a decent offer.

West Ham's £17 million offer seemed enough to tempt the club but not the player—but Newcastle could be persuaded to offer that amount to bring the big striker back home.

Spurs have money to spend following the £30 million sale of Luka Modric to Real Madrid, and one of their top targets appears to be Shakhtar Donetsk forward Willian.

Some media outlets have already reported that Spurs have had an offer of near £12 million rejected for the Brazilian.

There is no doubt that manager Andre Villas-Boas is an admirer, and he certainly wants to add more firepower to his team despite signing Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City.

Another Liverpool player who is likely heading for the Anfield exit door is midfielder Charlie Adam.

A staple in the side under Kenny Dalglish, Adam is now at least seventh-choice central midfielder for the Reds after new signings Joe Allen and Nuri Sahin (loan) were added to the ranks that already contained Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson—with the impressive Jonjo Shelvey also ahead of the Scot.

Mirror Sport are reporting that Liverpool want £5 million for the former Blackpool man, but Everton are baulking at that price.

Perhaps Rob Green should have stayed at West Ham.

Despite bringing in the former England goalkeeper this summer, QPR are now looking at signing Inter Milan's Julio Cesar in a bid to bulk up their defence, which shipped five goals on the opening day.

Cesar would bring vast experience and command plenty of respect, but his best days are perhaps already behind him despite not being exactly "old" in goalkeeping terms.

One of the most surprising deals of the summer might be that of Gaston Ramirez to newly promoted Southampton.

The Bologna playmaker has seen his name linked with the likes of Liverpool but it is Saints who appear to be in the driving seat to bring him to the Premier League with an £11 million deal.

The same article in the Mirror also has Southampton after Birmingham City defender Curtis Davies as Nigel Adkins seeks to strengthen his team enough to not suffer an immediate relegation.

Scott Sinclair, so far having not started this season for Swansea City, has been widely reported to be on his way to current Premier League champions Manchester City.

Sky Sports reported at the weekend that Tuesday would be the day that the tricky winger signed for the club, so more than £6 million should be heading the way of Michael Laudrup to further strengthen his impressive team.

Adam Johnson's exit to Sunderland means City have no natural winger in their squad, so Sinclair should fit right into Johnson's role. Whether that's a good thing or not, you can decide.

With an offer for Liverpool seemingly not forthcoming, Sunderland have reportedly stolen a march on the Anfield club rivals by launching a bid for Fulham attacker Clint Dempsey.

Dempsey has told Fulham he no longer wants to play for them and, with only 12 months left on his contract, wants a move before the window shuts.

Fulham are thought to want £8 million for last season's top scorer.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton, currently serving a 12-match suspension for his end-of-season meltdown against Manchester City, has seemingly been given a free reign to find a new club.

Barton himself wants to head to France for Marseille, though there appear to be issues with whether the Ligue 1 side can contribute enough of his wages to satisfy QPR.

They would be open to releasing him on a free to any club, but it might be more of a case of who will take a risk on him as opposed to how many teams want him—especially in England, where Barton will still be suspended for another two months.

French midfielder Yann M'Vila appears to be another at the top of Andre Villas-Boas' wish list as Spurs have reportedly launched an official bid for him.

The Rennes player is rated at £15 million by his club, and Spurs' offer does not quite match that valuation.

M'Vila, a powerful player in the middle of the park, would doubtless be a good signing for the London side and, with Scott Parker injured and Tom Huddlestone off on loan, would boost their options centrally.

Not a definite transfer by any means given recent relations between the clubs, but rumours of Daniel Sturridge going to Liverpool have been making the rounds ever since the Fernando Torres transfer in the opposite direction.

The latest reports have Liverpool readying a £15 million bid for the forward, who would likely see more playing time at Anfield as well as more chance of playing centrally instead of always from the right flank as part of a front three.

This one might be a long way from done, and Liverpool would likely have to sell a bigger-named player to accommodate Sturridge, but it could benefit both parties with Sturridge having just one year left on his current contract and not in the first XI at present under Roberto Di Matteo.
