Graphic: Premier League transfer and wage spending from the 2000/01 season to 2011/12

This graphic compares Premier League club transfer spending with wage spending, from the 2000/01 season to 2011/12. Transfer and wage spending is shown club by club as a rank from 1 to 20, which is proportionate to the width of the bars. Mouse over the bars to see exact spending figures.

The chart shows that if clubs want to place in the top six positions for a season, their spending generally has to rank within the top six on both wages and transfers.

Different clubs have had varying degrees of success with their spending strategies.

Chelsea has spent more than every other club on player salaries for every season since 2003/04, and won three titles in that time.

Man City's three year binge on players during transfer windows in the three seasons from 2008/09, where it spent tens of millions more than other clubs, also paid off with a historic victory last season.

While spending more generally increases a club's prospects, some have spent millions for little gain.

West Ham, for example, in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons spent £20 million on transfers over the two-year period, which put them among the top 10 spenders, only to be relegated the next season.
