Liverpool was already considered a club in transition, but the failure to seal the deal on Clint Dempsey guarantees that this season will be a tough one for the club.

ESPN reports that Dempsey will be moved to Tottenham in a move that ensured that Liverpool would fail to land any targets on the final day of the transfer window.

Soon after Dempsey's move was announced, The Telegraph reported that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was incensed by the owners' unwillingness to authorize a £7 million transfer. Rodgers evidently was only allowed to offer £5 million, £1 million less than Dempsey's eventual price to Tottenham.

Rodgers had assumed that unloading Andy Carroll would free up the funds necessary to acquire Dempsey, but the owners had different ideas, leaving Rodgers with few options at striker.

The failure to land Dempsey means that Liverpool will feature Luis Suarez as the club's only experienced striker. Unfortunately, that ensures that this season will be a transitional season for the club.

On the plus side, Liverpool features a good deal of young talent that should develop nicely. Raheem Sterling has impressed so far, with a brilliant performance against Manchester City.

Joe Allen has also proven to be a supremely talented footballer, as he too excelled against City. Allen forms an excellent duo with Sterling, and the two young footballers will be exciting to watch develop together.

Really, Liverpool has plenty of solid talent at the top, but the squad's lack of depth will ultimately be their undoing.

Adding Dempsey would have been exactly what the club needed to get on the right track, and the failure to do so is truly hard to bear.

Without Dempsey, Liverpool remains young, exciting and talented. However, that also means that Liverpool will be inconsistent, frustrating and occasionally maddening.

While this will be an enjoyable squad to watch going forward, this season could be a hard one to take for Liverpool supporters.
