UEFA Super Cup: 5 Reasons It Wasn't a Disaster for Chelsea

Chelsea ended up losing 4-1, being humbled for the first time this season. While it was tough to watch, there are some silver linings from the match which Chelsea fans need to remember.

At the end of the day, the Super Cup loss didn't really matter.

Chelsea are still in the Champions League, and they still are at the top of the EPL. Those are the two biggest competitions for the Blues, and neither of them were affected by this loss.

While it was tough to get smoked, Chelsea are still in good shape to win the two biggest trophies an English club can win.

In the first 12 days of the season, Chelsea played four matches.

All of those games were important, so it's not like Roberto Di Matteo had the option of resting the stars. It was an intense start to the season, and the boys looked a little tired.

Sure, they were coming off nearly a week's rest, but after three games in six days, they could've used a little more time to recover. It was clear they weren't engaged, and fatigue was probably a major factor.

Going into this match, it was clear that it meant more to Atletico Madrid.

They had won the competition with less prestige. They're from the league that English fans like to claim has only two teams. And they're the second-best team in their own city.

This was Atletico's chance to prove how good they actually are.

While Chelsea looked tired and disinterested, Atletico pushed forward and kept the Blues on their heels. It was a clinical attacking display from the Spanish side, and they fully deserved the result, which they clearly wanted more.

John Terry might not have changed everything, but he certainly would've organized the defense.

There was too much space between Gary Cahill, David Luiz and John Obi Mikel. Atletico Madrid carved that space up effortlessly. There was no organization in the back, which was why Chelsea conceded four goals.

With Terry, at least Chelsea would've looked a bit more organized. If nothing else, it became abundantly clear that Luiz still has a very long way to go.

Winning can lull you into a false sense of security.

Chelsea had won all three league matches by looking solid, poor and great (in that order). They were riding high; no one could touch them.

Then Atletico Madrid emphatically grounded them.

It was a great thing for the Blues moving forward. Now they can look within themselves to see what kind of competitors they actually are. If they're strong ones, they will bounce back from this drubbing with a refocused mindset, hungry to win trophies.
