Striker thinks new faces at Spurs need opportunity to settle

Jermain Defoe has given his backing to under-fire Andre Villas-Boas and is confident the Tottenham Hotspur head coach will prove a success if he is given time. Former Chelsea flop Villas-Boas has already come in for criticism at White Hart Lane after taking just two points from the opening three Premier League games of the season. The Portuguese's decisions in the recently closed summer transfer market have also been questioned, regardless of whether or not he or chairman Daniel Levy was giving the orders. But Defoe just thinks Villas-Boas - like Tottenham's six new players, including deadline day arrivals Clint Dempsey and Hugo Lloris - should be given the time to settle. The striker said at a press conference on international duty ahead of England's World Cup qualifying double-header against Moldova and Ukraine: "As players, when you join a new club, sometimes it takes a while. "It is not different for manager. When a new manager comes in, straight away you are going to be under pressure. It is a big club. "But it takes time. It is still early days. It is important to give managers a chance. "We have got a good squad at the club, a strong squad. I am sure we will be fine."
