Di Matteo sets new course for Chelsea defence

Having finally ended Chelsea FC's long wait for UEFA Champions League glory – and earned himself a two-year contract as the club's permanent manager – Roberto Di Matteo is busy plotting their title defence. Memories of last season's final in Munich still burn brightly, though.

"Such is life – sometimes things happen that you don't expect," the 42-year-old told UEFA.com. "Last year it happened to be a very surprising and positive ending to the season. The whole club and the players were magnificent in achieving this result."

Chelsea have not rested on their laurels, with the likes of Didier Drogba – the match winner in May's final against FC Bayern München – departing and Eden Hazard, Marko Marin, Victor Moses, Oscar and César Azpilicueta all coming in. "We lost some players so we needed to get in some new, young players who can give this club a future," Di Matteo explained.

"The bulk of the team is still here and it provides a good platform for all the players, for the new players coming in and the young players. We have got a good experienced team and I think they will continue to help drive the success of the club."
