World Football Gossip Roundup: Cristiano Ronaldo, Ganso, Didier Drogba and Jenas

The transfer window is shut but that doesn't seem to be stopping the world's media from linking players with transfers and coming up with the scoops on near misses from the summer sales.

Players with the biggest names in the game, and the biggest salaries, are always in demand and today's roundup proves no exception.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and Santos' in-demand playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso are the focus of attention today, as well as further news from Stamford Bridge and White Hart Lane.

There aren't many sides in the world who could afford a single player costing over £100 million, and Cristiano Ronaldo already plays for one of them.

Irrespective of whether you believe him—or any player—to be actually worth such a vast amount, Spanish newspaper AS are saying that English Premier League side Manchester City were convinced he was worth almost DOUBLE that!

A €200 million bid was launched for the attacker this summer according to the report, with the Portuguese captain set to earn a salary of around €400,000 per week—that's €20 million annually.

Needless to say Madrid turned down the approach, pointing to their No. 7's ONE BILLION EURO release clause as the going rate.

Spurs were widely reported to be looking at strengthening their midfield this summer, with incoming manager Andre Villas-Boas seemingly not happy with the numbers or quality at his disposal despite the presence of Sandro, Jake Livermore, Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Jenas, Scott Parker, the now-departed Luka Modric and new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Portuguese schemer Joao Moutinho was high on AVB's wanted list, but he failed to land his man—though Moussa Dembele did come in, arriving from Fulham.

The Daily Mirror have Villas-Boas now looking further South for his new recruit, with Santos' Brazilian playmaker Paolo Henrique, better known as Ganso, a prime target.

A quoted fee of £8 million has been carried by the paper.

Didier Drogba left Chelsea in the summer after finally winning the UEFA Champions League with them, and moved to Asia with Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua securing his signature.

The London Evening Standard claims that even after a short spell in China, Drogba was considering his future with the owners of the club keen for fresh terms to be renegotiated, and that Italian giants Juventus were desperate to bring the Ivorian striker back to Europe.

With Drogba on an estimated £200,000 per week at Shanghai Shenhua, Juve's offer fell well over halfway short of that, even when a performance-related bonus was taken into account.

Drogba has clearly made his choice and intends to see out his playing days in a current backwater of world football, perhaps to try and help raise the profile of the game on the continent.

Back to White Hart Lane now and more transfer business for Andre Villas-Boas to attend to, though this one is an outgoing deal.

Jermaine Jenas spent last term on loan at Aston Villa, but saw his season ruined by injury for the most part. With a host of central players at AVB's disposal, it seems unlikely that Jenas will be a starter too often for Spurs.

To that end, to improve his fitness and get back the sharpness and confidence that once saw Jenas a regular member of the England squad, Villas-Boas wants Jenas to go out on loan again and get some frequent playing time.

The Daily Mirror mentions that he was due to join Sunderland on loan before the transfer window shut before the deal fell through, and so now will look for a Championship side to join instead from next week.

Two of Chelsea's most experienced players are set to be ordered to train away from the first team for the coming season, with Florent Malouda and Paolo Ferreira no longer considered part of the squad for Roberto di Matteo, according to the Daily Mail.

The paper goes on to say how the duo were required to play in a reserves team friendly over the international break and that they could have their squad numbers revoked.

Should the negative relationship continue between club and players it is entirely possible that they could be asked—or could ask themselves—to have their contracts cancelled for the remaining season they have at the club, allowing them to move on a free transfer outside of Europe immediately or inside it in January.

Ferreira is behind Branislav Ivanovic and new boy Cesar Azpilicueta for the right-back role, while attacking midfielder Malouda has the likes of Juan Mata, Oscar, Eden Hazard, Ramires, Frank Lampard, Daniel Sturridge, Marko Marin and Victor Moses to contend with.

Malouda and Ferreira, sure to be discarded for free, cost Chelsea a combined €37 million when they originally signed.
