Jose Mourinho is urging his Real Madrid money-men to step up their pursuit of Tottenham flier Gareth Bale.

Real coach Mourinho is desperate to make a big statement and shake-up a squad that has been delivering disappointing results for the Spanish giants both in the Champions League and domestically.

Bale signed a new long-term contract in the summer, but the Spurs hierarchy are still bracing themselves for a fight to keep him.

Real signed a partnership agreement with Spurs after buying Luka Modric last summer, so already have close ties with the north Londoners.

Mourinho wants to strengthen his squad and also inject additional star quality, although any swoop for Bale would be unlikely before next summer.

Former Chelsea boss Mourinho wants to move on some of his current stars to fund a £50m-plus move for the Welshman.

That could see Kaka, some of Real big-name strikeforce and Mezut Ozil being moved on.

It is believed Mourinho has met with Real president Florentino Perez to try and push for the shake-up and a bid for Bale.
