Like it or not, money is the driving force of modern football. And filthy-rich owners are the conductors behind the wheel.

Alisher Usmanov, a Russian businessman worth more than $18 billion, owns a 30 percent share of historic English club Arsenal—though he doesn’t hold a seat on the club’s controlling board (via The Guardian). Usmanov isn’t quite a true owner, but he owns enough of a major club, and he is worth enough money, to put him on this list.

Usmanov has said he “dreams” of taking full control in North London, and with his money, it’s easy to see how that could happen.

In the Pacific Northwest of the United States, billionaire Paul Allen is part-owner of the Seattle Sounders—along with multiple other sports franchises in the area. Allen, a co-founder of the legendary technology company Microsoft, is reportedly worth $15 billion.

Back in England, Queens Park Rangers are controlled by multiple business. One of them is Lakshmi Mittal, the second-richest person in India, worth a reported $16 billion.

Finally, there’s Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner who’s either famous or infamous for his fortune, according to one’s allegiances. The Russian oil magnate is reportedly worth $12.1 billion (all figures according to Forbes).
