QPR manager Harry Redknapp targets up to five wins to stay up

Manager Harry Redknapp has said that bottom-placed QPR need to win up to five of their remaining eight games to avoid Premier League relegation.

Their two-game winning sequence ended on Saturday when they lost a thrilling match 3-2 at 17th-placed Aston Villa.

QPR are now seven points from safety, but Redknapp refused to give up on maintaining their top-flight status.

"We need to win four or five games. It is not impossible. While there is hope, you keep believing," he told the BBC.

"It is hard with the points situation, but we cannot be playing any better. We are playing very well, that is all we can do.

"With eight games to go, we need to keep trying to win the games. If we can do that, we can still do it."

In a rollercoaster fixture at Villa Park, Redknapp's men took the lead when Jermaine Jenas followed up on a rebound from a Bobby Zamora shot.

Seconds after a Jose Bosingwa free-kick hit the woodwork, they then conceded an equaliser against the run of play as Gabriel Agbonlahor headed in unmarked.

Andreas Weimann gave them the lead but Andros Townsend's deflected shot levelled things up for the visitors. Villa then got the decisive goal when Christian Benteke slotted in his 13th league strike of the season unopposed.

"We could have been three or four goals up at half-time, it was that one-sided," Redknapp added. "Their goalkeeper [Brad Guzan] pulled off several world-class saves and then they break and score.

"They could not believe their luck coming in at half-time.

"In the second half, we did not start as well, and it gave them a lift. But even then, at 2-2 we gave a sloppy third goal away."

The result for Villa means that they have beaten relegation rivals in consecutive weekends after last weekend's triumph at Reading, in the process moving six points clear of the drop zone.

Prior to the clash with QPR, manager Paul Lambert had insisted he was not "unduly worried" about the prospect of dropping down to the Championship and the Scot remained confident of a strong end to the season.

"Last week's win was a big win for us," the ex-Norwich boss said. "It is now the first time since we have done it back-to-back since [May] 2011, so it is a long time since we have had that feeling.

"We are still fighting [to stay up], as are a lot of teams. We have pulled a few in it and we are playing very well at this time.

"If we keep this up, I have always said we will be OK."

    'Arry isn't stupid, even if they go down he'll walk out citing the 'damage was already done before he arrived'. And off he will go to bankrupt another club.
    The media and BBC are desperate for QPR to stay up so they can suck up to their 'chosen one'. Arry this, Arry that, Arry Houdini.

    I really hope QPR go down. Not because I have anything against the club, but more because I couldn't stand to see 'Arry gloating after "working his magic" by spending about 25 million on what was already a capable albeit disharmonious side.

    This is Portsmouth all over again. With a bit of luck Fernenades will stick around and QPR won't be hit anywhere near as badly. But the culprit is the same.

    Well done 'arry, good joke! To put it into context, there are currently only 2 teams that have managed 5 wins from there previous 8 games, Utd & Arsenal.

    Speaking of Arsenal, why isn't 'arry given the same derisive treatment from the BBC for such a ludicrous comment as they give Wenger for similar suggestions that are actually more realistic!

    When QPR get relegated I hope it finally lays to rest the myth that Redknapp is a good manager. Irresponsible spending that could bankrupt the club so he can enhance his reputation to the intellectually challenged is not my idea of what being a good manager is all about

    When Hughes left QPR were 5 points from safety. Now QPR are 7 points from safety. Nice to see that Harry has waved his magic around and transformed QPR from a rock bottom team into a... rock bottom team. He must be deluded if he thinks that he can keep QPR up and get 5 wins.

    20 million pounds later and still seven points from safety. There in the same situation as when he took over. He's proving that he's just an average manager and there's no chance that he will stay when qpr go down.He thinks he's too good for the championship when in reality he's championship quality.

    No matter how badly 'Arry's team does, we still get his ugly face spread all over the football pages. How about covering some stories with more relevance to the real world, like Spurs apparent dependence on Bale, or Cardiff's rise to the Premiership? Anything, in fact, other than more of this fudging twit.
