Is the Scouser worth it?

United are prepared to up their offer for Leighton Baines to around the £20 million mark after the Goodison Park club rejected the initial £12 million bid.

According to reports the Old Trafford board have sanctioned a deal that will allow David Moyes to make an improved offer.

The Mail notes:

Manchester United will make a renewed bid of £15million plus add-ons for Everton defender Leighton Baines.

After rejecting an opening bid in the region of £12m from United, Everton insist the England left back is not for sale.

But United hope to persuade them with a deal that will total £20m including additional performance-related payments for the 28-year-old.

£20 million for a 28 year-old may seem excessive and it could well prove foolish should Baines fail to live up to the expectations already being placed upon him. It’s worth noting that despite having little re-sale value the defender is a proven Premier League player, something that automatically seems to carry a £10 million surcharge.

Personally I don’t think United need to fork out £20 for a left back who’s never quite hit the highs that Patrice Evra has, but then again, I didn’t think we needed to sign Robin Van Persie so what do I know?

As an Everton fan I cannot believe the absolute drivel that some of these united fans are coming out with.Evra a class above Bainesy, you honestly cannot believe the utter tripe that’s spilling out of your mouths. How many assists did Evra make last season??? And did he manage to score 2 or 3 goals compare his stats to bainseys the last 2 seasons and that my poor deluded man united fans will speak volumes on who is the best left back.If you don’t want him absolutely superb because us evertonians know he is one of the best left backs in the world and will be more than happy for him to stay and keep terrorising defences.

20m is too much for Baines, Evra can still play for more two season, before then Butner and Fabio would have catched there form.but Baines will be a good player for united.

if hazard is worth £35 and bale £80m, then baines is worth £20m = for me. penalties, assist, free kicks crosses, baines is worth a lot of points and money to Everton fc.

I’d rather keep Evra at United than let his experience go to a club like Monaco, that experience will help Fabio or Buttner out to improve their game, they’re still young at around the age of 23 so there’s plenty of time for them to make an impact at United, but even if United still think they need to spend money on a left back, I’d rather they go for Luke Shaw from Southhampton, I know he’s recently signed a new contract but he’d cost roughly £20 million and is about 10 years younger than Baines, which really would be a better option at left back, and he’d be at United for longer than what Baines would be, I don’t know why people are saying that Baines is the ‘younger’ option at left back when he’s only about 3 years younger than Evra, come 3 years down the line we are only going to be in this situation again, spending money on another left back when we could get a young player for the same fee, but won’t have to search so soon after we sign one, like we would for Luke Shaw, this is my opinion though, Baines is good but Evra in my opinion is a lot better.

I agree with Andres22 , No disrespect to Baines as he’s a Quality left back but in a few years he’ll be in his early thirties and Shaw isn’t in his twenties and has shown he has quality and he’s only gonna get better BUT do we really need another left back as we have 3 already?? If so buy Shaw then loan him back to Southampton for more 1st team experience , personally I’d be looking at the midfield , Tiago is a MUST and I’d be doing everything I could to bring in Fellaini , they are the players UTD need… the playmaker…the steel in other words players like Scholes and Keane
