Manchester United Transfer Rumours: Gareth Bale Is Worth Any Price for Club

Manchester United has been linked to a number of transfers this summer, but the acquisition of Gareth Bale is something that needs to happen at all costs.

This move certainly seems possible after Oliver Holt of Mirror Football reported that the club is set to make a huge bid for the star player:

Manchester United are making a massive £60million bid for Gareth Bale. Premier League champions United want Tottenham star Bale to be the first major signing of new manager David Moyes' reign.

The move for the Welshman is thought to be one of the reasons why United's vice chairman Ed Woodward is returning early from their pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.

This move will not be easy to complete, as Tottenham obviously does not want to part with one of the best young players in the sport. However, it is one that United must do whatever it takes to finalize.

After winning the EPL last season, the summer has seen a number of issues for Manchester United. David Moyes has not seamlessly taken over for Sir Alex Ferguson the way that he would have hoped.

The first issue is the situation following Wayne Rooney. Arguably the club's most iconic player now has an uncertain future after his role with the club came into question.

Although Moyes maintains that Rooney is not for sale, according to Ian Herbert of The Independent, the forward is considering forcing a transfer after being "confused and angry" at his club for recent statements. If he is eventually sold, it would not look good from a public relations standpoint.

Additionally, the club has struggled to get top targets to come to Old Trafford this offseason.

Thiago Alcantara chose to play in a more crowded midfield at Bayern Munich than play for Manchester United, while Barcelona immediately turned down a bid for Cesc Fabregas and claimed he is not for sale, according to Jamie Jackson of the Guardian.

The club that used to be able to bring in whichever players they wanted is now unable to complete deals.

Combining this inability to bring in new players with the likelihood of Rooney eventually leaving, there will not be a lot of faith from the fanbase as Moyes starts his first campaign.

However, this could all change if the club is able to get Bale. The 24-year-old player was named Footballer of the Year by the PFA this season, and his stardom would help fans forget about the previous issues from the summer.

Of course, the young player would also be a huge help on the pitch. Bale finished with 21 goals last season to go with four assists, and he displayed a great amount of skill to create opportunities for himself and others. 

Also, he has shown he can score from range with great consistency, as noted by WhoScored.com:

This ability to shoot from distance will allow him to complement Robin van Persie to create a better offense, instead of the two struggling to do well together.

Overall, Bale's performance last year ranked among the best in England and in Europe. His average match rating on WhoScored.com was a 7.89, which was the fifth-highest across the five major leagues.

Adding a player with this type of skill to United would easily make them the favorite to repeat as league champions, as well as make them top contenders for the Champions League. He would strengthen the biggest weakness at midfield and help overshadow any other problems on the pitch.

Most importantly, money is not an issue for Manchester United. According to Tom Etherington of Goal.com, Moyes recently described how management gave him the green light this summer:

Isn't it great that the club says, "There's no budget here, you go get who you want to get, just go and do it." We are looking at the best players. I do think it's important that we show people we are carrying on the traditions and trying to take the club forward.

With the reported £60 million bid, it is clear that there is money to spend. If the club needs to spend more, it is still worth it to keep up appearances as well as help the team for the future.

To paraphrase The Godfather, they need to send Tottenham an offer they cannot refuse. Spurs do not want to give up Bale, but United have to offer as much money as possible to complete a deal.

Otherwise, this could be yet another disappointment over a long summer.
