Manchester United line up record kit deal with Adidas

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to clinch a record-breaking £60million-a-season kit deal with Adidas after Nike pulled out of negotiations because the club asked for too much.

The proposed Adidas contract is understood to be worth more than double the £24m a season United earn from their current deal with Nike, which ends next summer after a 13-year partnership.

And it dwarfs the £21m Adidas pay to provide the kit for all the NBA teams in the US.

A Nike statement read: “Any partnership with a club or federation has to be mutually beneficial and the terms that were on offer for a renewed contract did not represent good value for Nike’s shareholders.

“United are a great club with passionate fans. We are proud to have been partners for the past 12 years and will continue to sponsor the club until the end of the 2014-15 season. We look forward to a successful final season with the club.”

Nike’s original deal, signed in 2002, was worth £303m, with extra income from a profit-share agreement from merchandise.

United unveiled their new home kit for the upcoming season yesterday – which will be the last designed by Nike and the first to bear the logo of new shirt sponsor Chevrolet.
