Three goals in two games. It’s a prediction that few Cardiff City fans would have made about Kenwyne Jones before the start of the season.

After all, he looked incredibly lacklustre over the course of his first four months at the club. Cardiff swapped Jones for Peter Odemwingie and Simon Lim hailed his first goal for the club. But he didn’t deliver anything beyond that.

He looked lazy, unfit and lacking in fight. And it was, mainly, because he was unfit.

His falling out with Stoke City was a public one and it was clear that Jones was lacking in game time.

His leaps for headers were off by a split-second, his runs toward goal ended in a lacklustre pass and he struggled to fit in to team that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn’t sure what to do with.

Two games into the season and he’s already got three goals. For anyone who saw him last season, it’s quite miraculous. I for one can claim a miracle! I did criticise him last season but now he’s seemingly firing, he could the key to our season.

Solskjaer seems to be favouring a formation where we play Jones as a target man with players like Adam Le Fondre, Mats Moller Daehli, Guido Burgstaller buzzing around him in a fluid system. Burgstaller started out wide on Saturday but with Daehli switching wings and Le Fondre getting up in support, it’s an incredibly attacking front four.

The question is whether Jones can keep it up. He’s fit and he’s a strong boy. His confidence will be flying now and if Solskjaer  can keep getting the best from him, he could end up top scorer in this division. Ole has made no secret of his fitness troubles when he arrived at the club and pre-season will have helped him.

He’s unplayable at his best but like a sleeping kitten at his worst.
