So that’s that then. Nathaniel Clyne plays two games for England, shows the rest of the country what Saints fans have been saying for two years, and immediately he is being coveted by Liverpool.

This is getting beyond a joke now isn’t it?

Does Brendan Rodgers not realise that there are other places he can look at players apart from St Mary’s and Wembley?

I’m hoping  Clyne has got his head screwed on and avoids any interest from the Reds like the plague, the evidence that he has is there, given that he turned down Manchester United for a regular starting berth with Southampton.

Liverpool’s massive overachieving of last season has come to a head with the loss of Luis Suarez and, despite spending the best part of £120 million, find themselves with Glen Johnson as a realistic selection option and completely reliant on a striker who spends more time on the treatment table than he does in his boots.

Rodger’s stock is as low now as it was high at the peak of last season and a player of Clyne’s quality should have no interest whatsoever in going to Anfield while he is still in charge. He only has to glance at the fortunes of his former team-mates who took the ‘easy route’ to the Champion’s League in the Summer.

Rickie Lambert is completely frozen out, despite the injury to Sturridge and the questionable attitude and form of Mario Balotelli and Dejan Lovren has become a laughing stock as he carries the can for Liverpool’s poor results. Only Adam Lallana is drawing any sort of plaudit, and even he is often left on the bench.

Clyne’s introduction to international football went incredibly well and he undoubtedly has a massive future as England’s first choice right back and playing at the highest level, but if he is to leave Saints Liverpool is not an appropriate final destination.

It’s just another stepping stone.

The other suitors from the fall out of this week would appear to be Manchester United, who have been long term admirers. My scouse friends and family will not forgive me for saying this, but that would be a much more suitable move for Clyne, especially long term.

That being said though, right now it is Saints who are more likely top four contenders than either of our friends from the North West, perhaps he would be better off staying exactly where he is?
