Foiled: Gervinho attempted to sneak a woman into Italy via plane (Picture: Getty)

Gervinho is one of those players that specialises in unpredictability – no-one knows what he’s going to do next, including himself.

It is unlikely, though, that anyone expected the ex-Arsenal man to get himself into hot water by trying to smuggle a woman onto a flight from Italy.

The 27-year-old’s club Roma had laid on a private jet to bring him back to the Italian capital after playing in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in his native Ivory Coast, but he turned up with an additional passenger.

The forward was accompanied by a woman who was not registered for the flight back to Italy, but he managed to bribe four members of staff at the airport to let her through, according to Italian newspaper Il Mattino.

Fittingly for Gervinho, what appeared to be a well-executed move failed at the crucial moment as his pilot refused to take off with an unauthorised passenger on board.

It remains to be seen what will happen to the Ivorian, but he’ll have to live with a guilty conscience as local presses reported that all four of the employees that took a bribe from him were fired as a result.
