It has been a quiet transfer window as far as Chelsea have been concerned but that could be set to change as both Mohamed Salah and Andre Schurrle near the Stamford Bridge exit doors.

The player Chelsea have most heavily been linked with is Colombia and Fiorentina star Juan Cuadrado, but Douglas Costa confirmed on Thursday night that the Blues had been in touch about a potential move.

Despite Mourinho seemingly pouring cold water over any deal for Cuadrado when he told reporters that the 26 fits in well in the Fiorentina and Colombia squad but not Chelsea’s, the links have not gone away and the Seria A Club are holding out for his £27 million release fee.

Costa could therefore be seen as a ‘cheaper’ alternative as the Blues increase their bid for the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder to £18.7 million, but it’s currently unclear if Chelsea are aiming for a double swoop to replace both Salah and Schurrle, or if it is a case of one or the other.

Chelsea’s second string have failed to make much of an impact this season which has made it awkward for Jose Mourinho when it has come to rotating his side or trying to influence matches with the personnel he has at his disposal on the bench, so we may yet see some activity from the Blues this window as they aim for the big prizes.

The West London side are truly blessed to have a first team as good as it is, but when John Terry is out the lack of leadership in defence is glaring, when Nemanja Matic isn’t around the defence looks vulnerable, without Eden Hazard they lack a bit of sparkle and neither Didier Drogba nor Loic Remy hold a candle to Diego Costa’s natural prowess in front of goal.

In Cuadrado and Douglas Costa the manager may be looking for players to make an impact from the bench where the current backup has failed, but I’m not sure either of these players would be the answer and would be concerned that Chelsea are walking into a similar panic purchase as buying Salah in the first place.
