New York City 2-0 New England

David Villa
Former Barcelona man David Villa was the star of the show, scoring one and providing another

David Villa scored New York City's first goal at Yankee Stadium as the club's first home match ended with victory over New England Revolution.

The former Barcelona striker slotted home early in the first half after a one-two with midfielder Ned Grabavoy.

Patrick Mullins got the second, tapping home on the counter-attack from a Villa pass as New England goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth was left stranded.

New England captain Jose Goncalves was sent off in front of a 43,507 crowd.

The former Hearts defender was dismissed after bringing down New York substitute Khiry Shelton, with the striker clean through on goal.

New York, an expansion franchise for the new Major League Soccer season, were formed in 2013 in a partnership between baseball giants the New York Yankees and Premier League champions Manchester City.

Villa will be joined in New York by Frank Lampard, now at Manchester City, at the end of the Premier League season.

LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers
LA Galaxy equalised in injury time, just two minutes after Portland Timbers had taken a 2-1 lead

Elsewhere, Alan Gordon scored an injury-time equaliser to earn LA Galaxy a point at Portland Timbers, just two minutes after Fanendo Adi scored his second of the match to put the home side 2-1 up.

Gyasi Zardes scored a second-half equaliser to bring LA Galaxy level after Adi slotted home in the first half, with Gordon nodding in following a corner to make it 2-2 in injury time.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, 34, will join LA Galaxy when his contract at Anfield expires this summer.
