Less than 10 months ago, England met Italy on a sweaty night in Manaus, suffering a 2-1 defeat that set the tone for a very disappointing World Cup campaign.

On Tuesday evening, the old European foes met once again in less tropical and less competitive circumstances: a friendly in Turin.

The Azzurri are undefeated since returning from Brazil, and England went into the game on a run of seven consecutive wins. At Juventus Stadium, both sides manage to progress without blotting their copy books, but the game was not a classic.

Before kick-off, most of the Twitter chatter surrounded England's New Savior Harry Kane, who had been handed his first start for the Three Lions...

Eight by Eight @8by8mag

Three Lions fans must be happy with Kane in the XI to begin the match against Italy! http://t.co/4nywOI0We2

Kristian Sturt - Transfer News @FootieWriter

Don't build up Harry Kane too much ITV. First words of the broadcast: "England have a new hero" Never learn from our media mistakes...

B/R Football @brfootball

Confirmed: The Great English Hope (“Harry Kane”) starts up front alongside Wayne Rooney for England. http://t.co/MNtMI3pnCg

Tim Lovejoy @timlovejoy

Roy's happy he's got Harry Kane 👊 https://t.co/sqOI4I4I1P

There was also much to be said about manager Roy Hodgson's decision to start Wayne Rooney in midfield, with Theo Walcott going up front...

The Peoples Person @PeoplesPerson_

Jones and Rooney in midfield? Get to bed Roy, you're tired http://t.co/Hx2lsMQZbx

As the game kicked off, Phil Jones trended as a nation revealed its skepticism over the Manchester United star's ability to play holding midfield...

George Pierce @GeorgePierce10

Phil Jones in midfield makes me feel sick

rich @hobbsygkn

Phil Jones doing a great job of watching the game pass him by. #mandown

Callum hope @callumhope16

Phil Jones Englands number 8 #JesusChrist http://t.co/WC0d0RJvxX

Ben Ryder-Smith @benrydersmith

I don't pay my TV license to watch Phil Jones play in central midfield

Sean Gannon ⚒️ @SeanGannon96

I don't think I've ever met anyone that actually rates Phil Jones

Huw Davies @thehuwdavies

Phil Jones No.8. What a world

Goal Pooch @GoalPooch

Phil Jones starting in midfield having played all season at centre-back. http://t.co/kFvCPQZFqC

Phil Jones in CM http://t.co/fRsZe285iL

There was also much to be said about the poor turnout at Juventus Stadium...

Alessandro Corbino @AleCorbino

People saying so many empty seats in Turin... Why would the Italians want to watch a weekday match against low key opposition? #ForzaItalia

Peter Spencer @PeteSpencer007

Why are there so many empty seats. Its a chance to see smalling Jones henderson. Who is the only manc by the way

Rose 🌹 @CoryRose32

So many italy fans have come dressed as empty seats! 😂

Robert Warren @RobGWarren

England sell out the away allocation with fans missing out on tickets & there's plenty of empty seats in the home end

Lou Scunt @Bluey320

This game has more empty seats than a Wigan game on a wet Wednesday night

Daniella Matar @DaniellaMatar

Juventus Stadium normally a cauldron of noise when #Juventus play. Eerily quiet tonight for #ITAENG - apart from far corner of #Eng fans

As the half-hour mark approached, a Rooney shot against the woodwork failed to impress those who had tuned in...

Pete Whitehouse @deepheatpete

England football matches should be prescribed as a sedative! What a snooze fest! #ENGVITA

Grace @GraceOfSuburbia

England are so boring #ENGVITA

Nathan Drane @WormieDrane1

Can't think of anything more boring than the England match.

In the 29th minute, however, the game was given an injection of life with a goal. The England defence made it easy for Giorgio Chiellini to put a cross on the head of Graziano Pelle...

talkSAINTS @talkSAINTS

Pellè's name is finally on the score sheet after this far post header. https://t.co/lbKm1Yhrxv #Saintsfc

Henry Winter @henrywinter

Poor defending by #eng. Chiellini beat Jones, right-foot cross, Pelle's fine header in. 1-0 to #ita. Only Rooney really showing for #eng.

It was a great header, but most of the praise directed at Pelle focused firmly on his magnificent hair...

Ski Mask the Plump God @BitcoinMami

Pelle's hair is a phenomenal bit of structural engineering. Even when he heads balls or is pushed over it will remain pretty much like this.

SPORTbible Writers @TSBibleWriters

Pelle glances Italy into the lead and not a hair gets knocked out of place. Magnificent.

Ava Fiore @Cleatscleavage

I credit that goal to Pelle's amazing hair! Lol

Matteo Bonetti @TheCalcioGuy

Graziano Pelle's glossy hair makes it hard for one to stay mad at him for too long

LM @lylexmackie

Pelle does have a lovely hair and beard though

The rest of the first half passed without incident, and the half-time reviews were not positive...

Henry Winter @henrywinter

Poor half from #eng. Jagielka good, Rooney ok. Little else. Giving ball away. System not working. Walcott’s pace needed wide.

Daniella Matar @DaniellaMatar

#ENG have been dire quite frankly. #Ita not much better to be fair, but England very very poor #ITAENG

Micky Hughes @mcshamrock

I ironed 4 shirt during the 1st half. Might make some changes during the break & up the tempo to see if I can do 5 in the 2nd half #ITAvENG

Jake Oates @jioates

Losing to the Azzuri again. https://t.co/rsAL7VHFKs #ITAvENG

COPA90 @COPA90

Watching England struggle against a strong international side is at least bringing back some nice memories from last summer. #ITAvENG

Kane's infallible status as a national treasure also looked to be in doubt...

WhoScored.com @WhoScored

Harry Kane: Only Kieran Gibbs (5.91) has recorded a lower WhoScored rating at half time in #ITAvENG than Kane (5.95)

Enough Of That Now @AndyGilder

Is Harry Kane now officially rubbish? #ITAvENG

Not Match of the Day @NOT_MOTD

Harry Kane's contribution to England in that first half. http://t.co/YAlOTIz5zB

VanKay @adagnitio

Harry Kane, the next England Flop?

As the second half progressed, there was a mixed reaction toward Chiellini: Some praised his defending abilities and forward runs, while others were disgusted by his theatrics and rough handling of Kane...

samuel🐝 @samharrisonnnn

chiellini is up there with the best CB to grace the sport

Mat Hawkhead @MatHawkhead

Chiellini seems to be excused from getting booked on the grounds that hes experienced and its 'The Italian way of defending'. Absolute tosh.

spenny @spennynew

I can now see why Suarez bit Chiellini

LeeW @leewoodford7

@bbc606 @mrdanwalker Chiellini trying to stick his tongue in Kane's ear. No wonder Suarez bit him! #ITAvENG http://t.co/dAjHWmMFUT

Kane may have felt Chiellini's grip on more than one occasion, but he was praised for the partnership he was forming with Rooney...

Ian Abrahams (Moose) @BroadcastMoose

Rooney and @hkane28 certainly have the makings of an international partnership

Scott @scottys92

Kane and Rooney partnership has potential.

Sy @SyClarke16

Kane and Rooney looks like a proper partnership up top .

It wasn't Rooney or Kane, however, who found the net for England in the 79th minute. Substitute Andros Townsend added to his personal highlight reel with a rocket from 25 yards...

Matt Law @Matt_Law_DT

Maybe Pochettino should consider leaving Townsend on past the 60th minute every so often....

Julian Gyimah @Julez_dta

Is this the Townsend that got yanked off after 15 minutes at Old Trafford?

Stephen Mangan @StephenMangan

100,000 Spurs fans going "why doesn't he do that for us?" #townsend

Footy Humour @FootyHumour

Townsend celebrating his goal http://t.co/gOPtFAML4W

OptaJoe @OptaJoe

3 - All three of Andros Townsend's goals for England have come from outside the box. Rocket.

The match finished honours even, which seemed like a fair result. England supporters will have to wait until June to see the national team in action again, but one fan will aim to solve his Ryan Mason tattoo conundrum before then...

dan @Danorako

why does ryan mason have a tattoo of my when i was 12?????? http://t.co/tC7K2SoDm2
