La Viola were enjoying a dramatic climb in the standings until a 4-0 defeat to Lazio in Week 26 forced them to reconsider their ambitions, even as the team is still running for the Coppa Italia and the Europa League.

Their goalkeeper, in an interview with La Nazione, believes it's important to be pragmatic.

“We mustn't aim to do something impossible, only play according to our qualities.

“We make no choices between the cups and the championship. Third place is still mathematically possible, so we've got to believe in it.”

The Romanian was also asked about his physical condition, as he'd recently been kept away from the pitch by an injury to his back.

“I'd say I'm quite well. I'm back in training as of this week and I'm working with the other goalkeepers.

“I'm doing almost all of the training sessions now, but I'm still short of something to reach my full potential.

“I'd like to be at 100 per cent in time for the next game against Sampdoria, but that's not easy. It's down to the body, not to me.

“I have a good, frank relationship with [Coach Vincenzo] Montella. I'd say it's as it should be and I hope it goes on that way.

“It's important for me to feel his trust. I'm pleased by his consideration, but I earned it because I did a good job. If a Coach thinks one of his players did well, can't he say so?”
