Arbeloa: ‘I speak my mind at Madrid’

Real Madrid full-back Alvaro Arbeloa says he has always spoken his mind ever since arriving at the club from Liverpool in July 2009.

The experienced 32-year-old also told of his relationship with the Spanish Press and commented on Madrid’s signing of defender Danilo from Porto for next season, amid rumours of his departure having started just four La Liga games this term.

“I’ve had some criticism during the bad moments because there was a time when I lost my fear of the Press and started to say what I thought. I’m proud of it,” maintained Arbeloa in an interview with El Chiringuito.

“I’m aware my image would be different if I followed the same path as others, which is not causing problems and not saying what’s on your mind.

“I don’t always say what I think but to be treated well yourself you have to treat others well. When I saw something I didn’t like I said so, whereas there are players who don’t criticise anyone to the Press.

“Danilo’s signing is good news for Real Madrid although he plays in my position. It’s great because half of Europe was after him.

“But I can honestly say I’m very happy at Madrid. I wouldn’t be as happy anywhere else and I want to complete the year I have left [on my contract].

“I don’t understand people saying I want to leave. I know what it means to be at Real Madrid.

“When people were advising me not to do it I came here so I could be among the best players, but knowing there were others who would be arriving.

“We will welcome Danilo in the best way possible,” he added.
