Diego Simeone doesn’t believe Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid are favourites for the Champions League quarter-final after the first leg.

The game at Vicente Calderon ended goalless but Madrid were the better side in the first half, with Cholo telling reporters he was glad his side picked it up after the break.

“I want to talk about the game and assess the change in my team from the first half to the second,” he said, AS reports.

“The tie is open after this result. The boys were able to react well. We talked about the football, what we were doing.

“The game is where it is. We’re against a very strong opponent and I appreciate the change in the second half. We will go forward, calmly and to an important game. But it’s all open.”

Simeone was also asked about a couple of disciplinary issues – the alleged elbow from Sergio Ramos that left Mario Mandzukic bloodied and bruised, and the suspensions picked up by Mario Suarez and Marcelo.

“The elbow was inadvertent,” he insisted. “[Mandzukic is] brave. He made a great effort and we need him.

“For both teams there have been heavy casualties,” he added, in reference to Mario and Marcelo.
