Emir Spahic: Former Leverkusen defender banned for fighting

Defender Emir Spahic has been banned for three months and fined 20,000 euros (£14,300) for a fight with stadium stewards that led to the termination of his contract with Bayer Leverkusen.

Video footage showed him punching and headbutting two stewards, with one losing several teeth, after a home cup defeat by Bayern Munich on 8 April.

The 34-year-old was immediately by released the German club.

The German Football Association says Spahic has accepted the ruling.

Spahic, a former Bosnia captain, was not available for the quarter-final against Bayern, having injured his knee in the previous round.

Leverkusen managing director Michael Schade said the player's actions had left the club "no other choice" than to terminate his contract, which was scheduled to run until 2016.
