Mexico have sacked coach Miguel Herrera less than two days after their Gold Cup win, following allegations that he punched a reporter.

The television journalist says he was hit in the neck and threatened by Herrera at Philadelphia Airport.

Incoming Mexican Soccer Federation boss Decio de Maria said the incident was not in keeping with the body's "spirit of fair and respectful competition".

"Our values, our principles, are above any result," De Maria said.

"In our profession, our industry, the matches are never over, and as public figures who represent an institution we must be absolutely clear on that," added De Maria, who takes up his post on Saturday.

Herrera, 47, led his team to the last 16 of the 2014 World Cup. Mexico have been knocked out of the tournament at the second round stage in all six editions since 1994.

He took over in October 2013 when he became Mexico's fourth manager in six weeks.
