Cardiff City earned their first league win of the season with an efficient performance against Wolves.

The home side took the lead before the break when Kenwyne Jones headed past stranded Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

Sammy Ameobi added a second just two minutes after replacing Jones in the second half, his shot deflecting in off Kortney Hause.

Wolves offered little and slipped to a second successive loss, having squandered a two-goal lead against QPR.

Having seen his side draw their first three league matches of the season, Cardiff manager Russell Slade made two changes from the midweek stalemate at Blackburn.

Joe Mason had Cardiff's first chance, his low shot saved by Ikeme following neat build-up play involving Jones and Joe Ralls.

Jones impressed on his first start of the season, providing a dependable link between Cardiff's midfield and attack and harrying Wolves' defenders.

On one occasion the Trinidadian striker was deemed too abrasive, as referee Andy Davies disallowed a Mason goal from a corner where Jones was judged to have fouled Wolves centre-back Richard Stearman.

Jones was not to be denied, however, and headed Cardiff in front as he met Fabio's clipped diagonal ball and nodded beyond the onrushing Ikeme.

An ankle injury cut Jones' afternoon short after 57 minutes, but his replacement Ameobi had an instant impact as he pounced on Kagisho Dikgacoi's header from a corner and fired firmly beyond Ikeme with the help of a deflection from Hause.

Mason had an opportunity to add a final gloss to the scoreline but his injury-time shot was smothered by Ikeme.

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade: "It was pretty even in the first period but we managed to draw first blood which is always important.

"In the second half I thought we were very good and controlled large parts of it, created chances and got the second goal.

"We probably could have had a third but we won't get greedy and we kept a clean sheet and that was important for us."

Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett said: "We had a lot of the ball and played a patient possession game but didn't have enough going forward.

"We didn't have a shot on target and that tells its own story and is very disappointing - we need to do better.

"We had possession up and around the halfway line and moved it from side to side and got into one-v-one situations but ultimately didn't hurt the Cardiff back four enough."
