“Dear Verona fans, I had the best years of my life here and not just in a sporting sense,” wrote Hallfredsson in an open letter.

“I consolidated the rapport with my wife, found true and sincere comfort after the death of my father, my son was born here and I intend to raise my second child here, regardless of the decision that brought me to sign for a new club, Udinese, and seek a new professional challenge.

“I gave everything for this team, my soul as they say in Italy, and it’s a pity to leave now in a moment of difficulty. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the club.

“I wish all the best to everyone, including the new Hellas players, so they can continue to fight and believe in the final objective.

“I am not someone who speaks much, you know that, so I hope in these few lines that I can transmit something to you, some of the unconditional love I have for this city, for Hellas and its fans.

“I am honoured to have worn this jersey and want to say simply THANK YOU with all my heart. Your Emil.”

Hallfredsson has been in Italy since 2007 at Reggina and then Hellas Verona.

Before that he had spells at Tottenham, Malmo, FK Lyn and Barnsley.
