Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit believes Arsene Wenger intends to use Jamie Vardy in an all-out attacking front three alongside Alexis Sanchez and one of Olivier Giroud or Danny Welbeck.
The Gunners activated Vardy’s release clause last week and hope to sign the Leicester City forward on a £20million deal.
The Foxes are desperate to keep the 29-year-old and are believed to have offered him a counter contract offer to persuade him to turn down Wenger’s side.
It’s likely that Vardy will now wait until after Euro 2016 to make his decision but former Gunner Petit believes he’s the perfect man for Arsenal – and that Wenger has a special plan for the forward.
‘He was unknown five years ago, now he has won the league, is playing in a major international tournament and Arsenal want to buy him. Wow, what an incredible story that is,’ said Petit.
‘Maybe Arsene wants someone to play on the left, with [Alexis] Sanchez on the right. With [Olivier] Giroud and [Danny] Welbeck it would be difficult to play him down the middle, so I suspect he wants him on the left.
‘Arsene’s problem is he has had so many players out injured for so long. Vardy is not often injured. He will be available. And he is a late starter, so he is hungry. He’s a good addition to the team.’
